History

The capital and largest city of Portugal, with a population of over half a million, Lisbon is a legendary city with over 20 centuries of history. Set on seven hills, as the legend tells, the city grew rapidly during the middle ages. In 1755, the majority of the city was destroyed by an earthquake, destroying many important structures, and leaving others in ruins.  The modern day city boasts a diverse range of attractions, from characteristic mosaic pavements, to breathtaking panoramic viewpoints and gastronomic delights.

Sightseeing

The city's most famous sights include:

Jerominos Monastery – Founded in 1501, an impressive & powerful World Heritage Monument

Belem Tower – A striking monument to Portugal’s Age of Discovery, located at the harbour entrance

St Georges Castle – Visible from across the city; a commanding palace, with museum and tower tours

Lisbon Cathedral – The city’s oldest building, dating from 1150

Berardo Museum – A large collection of modern art, including works from Warhol, Picasso & Dali

The city’s vintage tram network is perfect for sight-seeing, with the famed Tram 28 covering many of the top sites in an hour round trip.
